Why Sexual Concerns Are Common and Workable (Quick Education)

Sexual concerns are common and workable. Desire often functions spontaneously or responsively (it grows after safety, connection and arousal, not as an on/off switch). Stress, medications, chronic pain, and relationship tension can affect libido and arousal. Pain during sex is not normal and is never “just in your head.” It deserves a coordinated plan that may include therapy plus medical or pelvic floor PT. We won’t force a choice between “emotional” vs “physical” causes, we’ll address both at your pace.

Where to Start (and How We’ll Choose the Right Format)

  • Individual Sex Therapy helps when shame, anxiety, identity or performance concerns feel personal or you want privacy to explore.

  • Couples Sex Therapy supports desire differences, avoidance cycles and rebuilding pleasure and trust together.

  • Multi Partner Therapy helps CNM/poly partners navigate desire across relationships, set time/energy boundaries and align agreements.

Approaches that often help:

EFT (for safety, bonding and repair when intimacy is stressful), IFS (to soften shame/avoidance and build self compassion), EMDR (to reduce the charge of past experiences that impact intimacy), and ACT/CBT (to unhook from performance anxiety and rebuild confidence).

A Calm, Paced Path Forward (What Working Together Looks Like)

We begin by stabilizing pressure and clarifying goals. We explore patterns from the past and present with respect for your boundaries and introduce consent based practices that build comfort and curiosity. When pain or trauma is part of the picture we’ll pace things carefully, use EMDR or IFS to address the trauma and coordinate with pelvic floor PT/medical providers when needed. Finally, we create new patterns with communication scripts, rituals of connection, and plans that fit your reality.

  • You feel less pressure and more choice with a kinder internal dialogue around sex and intimacy.

  • You and/or your partner(s) communicate needs, limits and desires more clearly and with less defensiveness.

  • Pain and anxiety decrease, while arousal and/or orgasm become more dependable and accessible.

  • Intimacy feels more playful, connected, and meaningful, not just focused on frequency.

What Improves Over Time

  • Homework practices are often used to build comfort and connection with yourself and your partner or partners. These activities are thoroughly discussed before and are assigned with intention and consent of all participants.

  • We’ll use a trauma informed, biopsychosocial plan and collaborate with pelvic floor PT/medical when helpful.

  • Yes. This is CNM and kink affirming care aligned with your values and agreements.

  • Many feel relief from pressure early on. Deeper shifts build with practice, safety and coordination when pain is involved.
